Region IV’s World Meteorological Organization’s Hurricane Committee has officially retired the name Harvey as a storm name.
Names are reused on a six-year cycle, unless the future use of a particular name would be insensitive. Harvey has been retired due to the extensive damage caused by the Aug. 25, 2017 hurricane.
Harvey is the second costliest hurricane in the United States. At least 68 people died from the direct effects of the storm, which is the largest number of hurricane related deaths in Texas since 1919.
