Down the field

The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate soccer team shut out the Somerset Lady Bulldogs, while splitting goals equally through the first and second half of play in route to a 6-0 victory Saturday, March 27 in Beeville.

The Lady Pirates advance to the area round of the playoffs with a 16-4 overall record.

RFHS Head Girls Soccer Coach Mitchell Lynch said Somerset’s game plan early slowed the team down a bit, but the team adjusted and turned it on the rest of the way.

“They definitely had a good scouting report on us to figure out how to play us effectively, and they did. They defended really well early on,” said Lynch. “But, once we were able to break through, we forced them to push up. Which made life a lot easier for us on the attack.”

Somerset attempted only one shot on keeper Crystal Bueno, an off-target shot that hit the field goal post. Lynch said his defense was an organized unit and played well.

“I give a lot of credit to assistant coach Warren Mitchell who’s been working with our defense,” said Lynch. “We’ve come along way over the course of the season in terms of our defensive organization. It’s tough to play in our defense.”

In the first half, RFHS was scoreless for the first 20 minutes until Kiley Kopp faked out the Somerset keeper on a possession inside the 18-yard box and finished in the front corner of the net.

In the 34th minute, Jessica Schibi, after being subbed in at forward, put a shot into the right corner of the net after making a deep run from the half-circle and outrunning the Somerset back line.

In the 38th minute, Madison Duval got position inside a Somerset defender and made a run deep into Lady Bulldog territory by herself. Duval scored on a shot right over the reach of the Somerset keeper to make it 3-0 at the half.

In the second half, Duval scored again in the 50th minute after receiving a cross from Kopp.

In the 60th minute, Duval delivered an accurate cross from the corner to Caitlyn Ramaker, who finished with her right foot into the opposite corner of the net for a 5-0 lead.

In the 69th minute, Duval completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game to put RFHS up 6-0 for the remaining 11 minutes.

Duval led RFHS in scoring with three goals.

Kopp, Ramaker, and Schibi each scored one.

RFHS played their area round game against Fredericksburg Tuesday, March 30 in Floresville.
