The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) varsity tennis team won the District 26-4A team tennis championship after defeating Beeville 11-1 Monday, Sept. 28 in Beeville.
RFHS was the first to win 10 matches after jumping out to a 6-1 lead following doubles play. RFHS then won five straight singles matches to take a 10 game lead and clinch the district title away from Beeville.
“It was a total team effort. Every player on our team won at least one match and that is what team tennis is all about,” said RFHS Head Tennis Coach Roben Eller.
In boys’ doubles, Cameron Simpson/Jaby Tarkington, Taylor Hoover/Kyle Bradshaw, and John Larson/Eli Johnson won their matchups.
In girls’ doubles, Haylie Davis/Emma Sundberg, Jami Bleiker/Emma Jungman, and Eanna Foster/Anne Stevens won their matchups.
In the initial boys’ singles matches, Daniel Garza and Hunter Bracht put RFHS up 8-1 with their victories.
Then, Sundberg, Davis, and Stevens won their girls singles matches to create the 11-1 gap over Beeville.
Both teams continued with the rest of their scheduled matches. RFHS remained on top with a final score of 14-5.
Sam Holden, Hoover, John Larson, and Johnson added to the score in boys’ singles.
J. Bleiker, Foster and Madeleine Crabb also added to the score with wins in girls’ singles.
“Coach Debbie Bleiker and I are proud of our players. They have been working hard, and we can really see the improvement in their games,” said Eller.
RFHS will play the fourth seed in District 25-4A in the Bi-District round of the playoffs Monday, Oct. 26 or Tuesday, Oct. 27. The opponent has yet to be determined.
The Pirates played at Gregory-Portland Saturday, Oct. 3. Their next tournaments will be Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Victoria and Friday, Oct. 16 in Corpus Christi.
