The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate basketball team took an early lead over the Ingleside Lady Mustangs and remained ahead in a 41-37 victory Tuesday, Jan. 28 in Ingleside.

RFHS’ district record moves to 5-5 and its overall record 15-14.

Ingleside hung around the Lady Pirates for most of the game and even made a strong push in the final minute to try and take the game away. However, RFHS sustained its lead and did not let Ingleside go on a long enough run to take it away.

In the first quarter, RFHS jumped on top with a 7-1 lead that was extended to 10-1 on a 3-point field goal (FG) by Jordan Malone. Malone added one more 3-point shot a minute later and Mikayla Molina also hit a 3-point FG soon after. Ingleside squeezed in a few points before the end of the quarter to make it 16-9.

In the second, RFHS had a rocky start with numerous turnovers, allowing Ingleside to put the game within four at 19-15. RFHS eventually got back on track and attacked Ingleside in the paint. The quarter ended up being very physical, with more than 10 fouls called against both teams collectively. Malone challenged Ingleside in the post multiple times and went 7-8 from the free throw line. The late run put RFHS ahead 30-23.

In the third, both teams struggled to score against each other. The RFHS defense played very well, forcing multiple turnovers. However, RFHS struggled to turn them into points and remained close to Ingleside. Kaylee Howell had the most success against Ingleside in the quarter, going 3-4 from the line and growing RFHS’ lead just slightly 36-27.

In the fourth, Ingleside went on a big run early in the quarter and got within three points of RFHS. Howell then extended RFHS’ lead to five after going full court and finishing on a layup to make it 40-35. Howell continued to drive into the paint, along with Alyssa Garcia, and kept RFHS’ just ahead of Ingleside in the final minute to win 41-37.

Malone led RFHS in scoring with 17 points.

Howell scored 15 points and Molina finished with five points.

RFHS played West Oso Friday, Jan. 28. They play again at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Orange Grove.
