Despite an aggressive Miller defense, Kaylee Howell found consistent success in the paint and from the free throw line.

The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate basketball team continued its run of eight wins in a row after defeating the Miller Lady Bucs 56-39 Friday, Dec. 18 at Miller.

Their overall record moves to 11-4, with a 2-0 district record.

Though one wouldn’t realize it watching the team play, RFHS Head Girls Basketball Coach Morgan Hale said the team has been “banged up” as of late. However, each game has seen a different player step in and contribute in big moments.

“We’re beat up right now, but every game its someone else stepping up. Tonight it was Messiah hitting all those three’s,” said Hale. “That’s a mark of a good team, when you can look at multiple, different people to step up.”

Messiah Hernandez hit five 3-point field goals during the game, finishing with 15 points. An impressive performance that was bolstered by another big, physical game inside for Kaylee Howell.

Howell was fouled throughout the game, but made the Lady Bucs pay at the line. She finished with 22 points, going 12-16 from the free throw line.

Lilith Solis followed Hernandez and Howell with six points.

Currently RFHS is tied with Beeville for first place in District 26-4A.

RFHS played its last non-district game Tuesday, Dec. 22 against Tuloso-Midway. Following the Christmas break, their next game is at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 at home against West Oso.
