The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate basketball team led a fourth quarter comeback for their first district win of the season, defeating the Beeville Trojans 53-50 Friday, Jan. 7 at home.

The Pirates are currently 1-1 in district play with an overall record of 9-15.

With 4:30 left in the fourth quarter, RFHS was down 10 after being outscored in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter. RFHS Head Coach Damien Bates called a timeout and made a difficult decision to bench his best player, Mathew Vasquez, in order to run a smaller lineup.

“They went small and their big was kind of hurting Mathew a little bit,” said Bates. “It was one of those things where, ‘Man, do you take off your best player to try to match up with them?’ And that’s kind of what we did.

“In the timeout, it was just a matter of keep fighting.”

RFHS eventually closed the 10-point gap on Beeville after three straight free throws made by Carter Engel after being fouled on a 3-point shot. In that stretch, Engel led the Pirates in scoring. After Bates’ timeout, Engel said the team began playing with more effort.

“During those last four minutes, we started pushing the tempo and getting up on them,” said Engel. “That caused us to lead that come back and come away with the win.”

Vasquez led RFHS in scoring with 17 points.

Engel followed with 12 points.

Roman Cox followed with eight points.

The Pirates played Ingleside Tuesday, Jan. 11. Their next game is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14 at home against Sinton.
