The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate basketball team played a tough first quarter against the Beeville Lady Trojans but could not sustain it, losing 42-30 Friday, Jan. 17 in Beeville.

RFHS’ district record falls to 3-4 and its overall record 13-13.

The Lady Pirates completed the first half of its district schedule with a 3-4 record, putting them in fifth place. Beeville sits in first place with a 7-0 record. Robstown, Sinton, and West Oso are in a three-way tie for second place with a 5-2 record.

After a great first quarter of play against the first place Lady Trojans, RFHS struggled the remainder of the game as Beeville fired back with a big second quarter that put them ahead for the remainder of the game.

In the first quarter, RFHS attacked Beeville early in the paint with Kaylee Howell and Jordan Malone finishing on layups and forcing fouls. The RFHS defense also forced numerous missed shots by Beeville, allowing only 3 points in the quarter. Lilith Solis finished on a layup and put RFHS ahead 8-3.

In the second, Beeville roared back into the game after numerous turnovers by RFHS gave the Lady Trojans easy buckets to take the lead. A 3-point shot by Malone suppressed the lead for a time, tying it at 12-all. However, Beeville continued to capitalize on the mistakes of RFHS and scored 20 points in the second quarter alone to give them a 23-12 at the half.

In the third, RFHS played another good quarter defensively, holding Beeville to only seven points. The RFHS offense also outscored Beeville, 8-7. However, with the lead still safely in hand, Beeville tried to kill as much clock as possible and prevented RFHS from scoring, ending the quarter at 30-20.

In the fourth, Beeville looked to pull away on a five-point run until Howell and Malone took charge and attacked the interior of the Beeville defense to put the game closer. Nonetheless, Beeville also went on a run later in the quarter to solidify its lead to win 42-30.

Malone and Solis led RFHS in scoring with 10 points each.

Howell finished with nine points.

RFHS played Kingsville Tuesday, Jan. 21. They play again at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 at Robstown.
