The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate soccer team defeated the Beeville Trojans 5-3 after a strong first half Friday, Feb. 21 at home.

The Pirates’ overall and district record is currently 3-1.

Beeville took an early 1-0 lead five minutes into the game as RFHS struggled offensively. However, the Pirates eventually got into a rhythm and ripped off three first half goals.

In the first half, Beeville took the early lead in the fourth minute after a shot by a Beeville striker got past keeper Michael Gonzalez after it ricocheted off a hole in the ground and into the net.

In the 19th minute, the Pirates finally broke through the Beeville defense after a forward cross by Cody Davila got past Beeville’s backline to Axel Espino. Espino made good use of the 1-on-1 opportunity with the Beeville keeper and snuck the ball under a diving attempt to make it 1-1.

In the 21st minute, RFHS made a strong attack up field and scored off a strike by Richard Lizcano. Lizcano used touch in shooting from the right side of the goal to float it overhead of the Beeville keeper and into the net.

In the 38th minute, Espino got another 1-on-1 opportunity with the Beeville keeper after beating the Beeville backline to another forward cross. The Beeville keeper got a piece of the shot this time around, however it was not enough to stop Espino’s shot for his second goal. RFHS went into the half up 3-1.

In the second half, Beeville scored another opening half goal eight minutes in off a miscommunication between the RFHS keeper and defense.

RFHS answered back a minute later.

Joel Gonzalez led an attack against Beeville and sent over a cross to the backside of the net. Hugo Gutierrez was there to receive it and chipped the ball over the keeper with little room for a good finish. The goal gave RFHS a 4-1 lead.

Later in the 65th minute, RFHS scored once more before resting its starters on a goal by David Lozano. Lizcano initially got a shot off on the Beeville keeper, but was saved. Lozano came in after the save and cleaned up the attempt for RFHS’ 5th goal.

The Pirates then pulled their starters in the final minutes and finished with a 5-3 victory.

Espino led RFHS in goals with two.

RFHS played Kingsville Tuesday, Feb. 25. Next game is 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 against Santa Gertrudis Academy at home.
