The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate soccer team got everyone involved against the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs in their 8-0 win Friday, Feb. 26 at home.
After the team’s three week shutdown due to being quarantined (COVID-19) and the arctic front, RFHS played and won all three of their district games last week.
RFHS’ current district record stands at 4-0, with a 9-3 overall record.
In the first half, RFHS took a 3-0 lead and kept keeper Crystal Bueno clear of pressure from Yoakum.
It took a little while for the Lady Pirates to get going, but after the first goal, RFHS began to pour it on into the second half.
In the 18th minute, Kiley Kopp made a run from the outside and took it all the way for a shot above the Yoakum keeper.
30 seconds later and still in the 18th minute, Riley Parker made a run up the outside and passed to KJ Whidden inside the 18 for an easy flick into the net.
In the 23rd minute, Whidden made a pass to Kopp and took a shot just outside the 18 for RFHS’ third and final goal of the half.
In the 46th minute, Naveya Davila dribbled up field and took a shot just inside the 18 for her first goal of the game. Two minutes later in the 48th minute, Davila scored again to give RFHS a 5-0 lead.
In the 70th minute, Madison Duval took a corner and crossed it in directly to Rachel Baergen. Baergen got a piece of it and put it in the Yoakum net for a sixth RFHS’ goal.
In the 71st minute, Danielle Dawkins finally got her goal after playing up all game. Dawkins got behind a solo Yoakum defender after receiving a pass from Whidden. She took it to the net and put down a powerful shot into the lower right corner for a 7-0 lead.
In the 78th minute, Dawkins nearly had her second goal but was blocked by the Yoakum keeper. The ball was blocked back into play and Jordan Garza crashed the net and scored off the rebound to make it 8-0.
RFHS’ next district game is 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4 at Calhoun.
