The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate volleyball team made the Orange Grove (OG) Lady Bulldogs fight for every point in an impressive defensive performance to take the game in three sets, 25-18, 25-23, and 25-13, Tuesday, Oct. 1 in Orange Grove.
RFHS’ overall record moves to 21-12 and 6-1 in district play.
The Lady Pirates are currently in second place in District 31-4A standings. Sinton remains in first with a 7-0 record and Robstown in third with a 5-2 record.
In set one, both teams fought back and forth to start the set with big defensive plays made by Molly Frost and Jackie Simmonds to keep rallies alive. Kaylee Howell later helped lead a small rally offensively and defensively for RFHS to take a small lead as the set winded down. Faith Ngo finished the set for RFHS, accounting for the last two points on a kill and block to take it 25-18.
In set two, OG took advantage of a couple defensive miscues by RFHS to take a small lead early in the set. However, the Lady Pirates fought back later in the set and tied up the score at 18-18 after a strong run offensively by RFHS’ frontcourt. RFHS continued to play strong offensively and forced defensive mistakes in the backcourt of OG to win the set 25-23.
In set three, RFHS proved to be the stronger team as OG struggled to keep up offensively with the Lady Pirates and lost the set 25-13.
Howell led RFHS in kills with 11. Allie Manson and Simmonds followed with seven kills each.
Frost led RFHS in assists with 20. Mikayla Molina followed with nine assists.
Frost and Molina led RFHS in aces with two each.
Howell led RFHS in blocks with nine. Simmonds followed with five blocks.
Frost led RFHS in digs with 16. Emily Resendez followed with 13 digs.
RFHS’ next district game is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 against Beeville at home.
