The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate baseball team took a temporary lead through the first two innings before the Robstown Cotton Pickers rallied back in the next three to take the game away from RFHS in five innings 14-2 Friday, March 29 at home.
RFHS is now 3-4 through the first half of district play and is 11-8 overall.
Through the first half of play, RFHS sits tied with Beeville for fifth place in District 31-4A standings.
Adam Muirhead was the starting pitcher for RFHS and pitched through three innings with five strikeouts and allowed five earned runs.
In the first inning with bases loaded, Tanor Waggoner grounded out but was able to bring in Clay Williams from third. Following Waggoner’s hit, Luke Muirhead hit a high grounder to third base and sprinted to first. The third baseman was unable to field the ball cleanly and threw it high back to first and allowed L. Muirhead to get on base. John Chupe ran home from third on the throw back to first and gave RFHS a 2-0 lead.
RFHS went into the third inning holding a 2-0 lead. However, Robstown got back into the game with three runs in the top of the third.
In the fourth, Robstown continued to score off timely base hits with runners in scoring position off of walks.
RFHS was forced to change pitchers and Konnor McMahon relieved A. Muirhead.
McMahon pitched one inning through the fourth and after allowing four more earned runs, McMahon was relieved by Carsen Flores in the fifth.
Robstown continued to connect on base hits through the fifth inning and took a 14-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
In RFHS last attempt to score two more runs, Robstown held RFHS scoreless to take the 14-2 win in the fifth inning by run rule.
L. Muirhead finished with one hit and one run batted in (RBI).
Waggoner finished with one RBI.
Michael Mayes and Zachary Zavala finished with one hit.
RFHS played Ingleside Tuesday, April 2. Their next game is 7 p.m. Friday, April 5 at West Oso.
