Great Blue Heron at Bent Oaks Rookery

Several Native American Tribes look at the heron as a symbol of patience and good luck. If Native American fishermen spot a heron, it means good luck is with them, and they will have a successful fishing trip.

The Great Blue Heron is a common heron found in Rockport, and the largest of the heron species in North America standing about four foot tall with wingspans reaching 5.5 to 6.5 feet. Their regal appearance, plumage and accessibility make them an excellent target for bird watchers as well as photographers. John Martel of John Martel Photography/Art gallery located at 302 S. Austin St. in downtown Rockport has often made art from these avian beauties and has shared the images below taken from easily accessible land spots.
