The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate soccer team defeated the Gregory-Portland (GP) Wildcats 2-1 Tuesday, Jan. 7 at home.

RFHS, still in non-district play, is currently holds a 3-4 overall record.

The Pirates haven’t defeated GP in a soccer game since 2013.

After a 5-0 loss to GP last weekend at a tournament in Beeville, RFHS Head Boys Soccer Coach Mike Elkins said GP was vulnerable and knew the boys could beat them. Less than a week later, the Pirates did just that.

Joel Gonzalez scored the first goal for RFHS to put the score at 1-1 before halftime.

In the second half, the Pirates shut down GP and Alejandro Ruiz came through for RFHS’ second goal midway through the half to seal the win over GP.

RFHS’ next game is Friday, Jan. 17 against Bishop.
