The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate soccer team defeated the Gonzales Apaches 4-3 Saturday, Feb. 20 at home. RFHS played its first game in a week due to cold fronts postponing competition.
RFHS’ district record improves to 3-1, with an overall record of 6-5.
After giving up an early goal to the Apaches in the 6th minute, Richard Lizcano put the score at 1-1 in the 12th minute after cleaning up a deflected shot by Cristobal Deleon near the six-yard box.
In the 21st minute, Lizcano was there again to clean up an attempted shot by Max Carreon. As Carreon’s shot headed straight to the Apache keeper, Lizcano put a foot on the ball and redirected the shot into the front corner of the net to give RFHS a 2-1 lead.
In the 28th minute, Gonzales was given a penalty kick on a handball committed in the penalty area. However, Michael Gonzalez came up with a great diving stop near the right corner of the goal to sustain RFHS’ lead.
As the game was nearing halftime, Deleon scored his first goal of the game in the 35th minute to give RFHS a 3-1 lead into the half.
In the second half, Gonzales scored again in the 50th minute as players and coaches began to get chippy with the head referee. Both teams received multiple yellow cards in the game. After a second yellow card, midfielder Cody Davila was red carded in the 61st minute and ejected. RFHS played the final 19 minutes with 10 players.
In the 69th minute, Lizcano scored his third goal of the game by himself after receiving a pass into the penalty area. Lizcano tried to chip the ball over the keeper, but after deflecting off the middle post, Lizcano followed the shot and headed it back into the net to make it 4-2.
Despite another goal scored by Gonzales a minute later, RFHS held on in in the final 10 minutes.
After playing Yoakum Tuesday, Feb. 23, RFHS will play Beeville at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 at home.
