Three state bound

Kaylee Howell placed first in high jump at the regional track meet with a leap of 5’3”. She and two other athletes are advancing to the state track meet in Austin (see sports).

The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate and Lady Pirate track teams competed in the Region IV-4A Regional Track Meet Friday and Saturday, April 26-27 at Texas A&M University – Kingsville.

The Pirates finished the meet as a team in eighth place with 24 points.

The Lady Pirates finished the meet tied for 14th place with 16 points.

Junior Cruz Estrada was the first Pirate to qualify individually for the State Track Meet. Estrada finished second place in discus with a throw of 162’7”. The throw gave him a one-inch advantage over third place finisher Marlin Johnson of Ingleside.

Freshman Kaylee Howell was the lone Lady Pirate to qualify for a spot at the State Track Meet. She finished first place in high jump with a personal record height of 5’3”. She tied with second place finisher Sullivan Wilke of Bandera but Howell had fewer scratches, giving her the advantage for first place. Howell also finished eighth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.90.

Senior Carter McKee was the final Pirate to qualify for a berth at the State Track Meet. He finished second place in the 300 meter hurdles with a personal record time of 39.56. The race was a photo finish as McKee edged third place finisher Ace Whitehead of Lampasas by .12 seconds. McKee also placed fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.91.

Pirates placing in the top 12 places at the regional meet but not advancing to state in their respective events are as follows:

Jacob Krupa placed sixth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:44.03.

Chevy Hull placed sixth in shot put with a throw of 48’11”. He also placed fifth in discus with a throw of 155’8”.

The Pirates 800 meter relay team of Baily Ngo-Nguyen, Will Smith, Sam Cheaney, and Nathan Terhune placed 11th with a time of 1:33.35.

Lady Pirates placing in the top 12 places at the regional meet but not advancing to state in their respective events are as follows:

Renee McKenzie placed fifth in shot put with a throw of 37’3”.

Mikey Dominguez placed in a three-way tie for third place in pole vault with a height of 11’. She placed fifth officially due to scratches.

Sophia Vaughn placed 12th in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:51.98. She also placed 14th in the 3200 meter run.

Estrada, Howell, and McKee will compete in the State Track and Field Meet Saturday, May 11 in Austin at the Mike A. Myers Track Complex of the University of Texas.

Howell is set to begin at 10 a.m., Estrada will begin at 2 p.m., and McKee is scheduled to run at 8:35 p.m.
