The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate soccer team never gave the Gonzalez Apaches a chance to get back in the game, shutting them down 4-0 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs Thursday, March 28 in Victoria.
RFHS improves its overall record to 14-4-2.
The Lady Pirates put on a dominating performance against Gonzalez, allowing the Lady Apaches only one shot on goal and creating multiple opportunities offensively that yielded four goals against the Gonzalez defense.
“We knew it was going to be tough. That team was very physical, very athletic, and we really had to earn that,” said RFHS Head Girls Soccer Coach Mitchell Lynch. “It was good to come in and really compete and get the result that we did.”
In the first half, RFHS created multiple opportunities to score early. However, the Gonzalez keeper was also playing well and made multiple stops against RFHS’ offense. KJ Whidden, Emily Resendez, Zoe Aery, and Allie Manson provided constant pressure up top.
RFHS was unable to put a ball into the back of the net until the 29th minute. Resendez beat one defender to the goal inside the 18 and was finally able to squeeze in a shot between the Gonzalez keeper and the left goalpost to give RFHS a 1-0 lead.
In the 38th minute, Resendez struck again just before the half. Linda Sandoval gained possession near the penalty mark and gave a quick pass to Resendez. She then took a shot to the opposing end of the goal and just out of the reach of the Gonzalez keeper to give RFHS a 2-0 lead going into the half.
In the second half, RFHS started off strong with a quick goal inside the first two minutes.
In the 42nd minute, Whidden used her head to put a clean strike on goal off a set piece for goal number three.
In the 66th minute, Whidden struck again on a high effort play to the goal. She received a lobbed through pass and was able to run under it. She won possession and split two defenders just inside the 18-yard box and took a shot on goal to the left side that was too fast for the Gonzalez keeper.
For the next 14 minutes, the RFHS back line continued to stop the attacks of Gonzalez and held on for keeper Trinity Sifuentas to keep her clean sheet and win 4-0.
RFHS will play the winner of the game between Rio Hondo and IDEA Quest College Prep Tuesday, April 2. A time and location for the game had not been determined by press deadline.
