The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate baseball team picked up an important victory over the Orange Grove (OG) Bulldogs 6-5 Tuesday, April 9 at home.

RFHS holds a 6-4 district record and 14-8 overall record.

With four games remaining in the district season, the win over OG puts Rockport in a three-way tie for third place with Beeville and Robstown. All three teams are one game behind Ingleside in second place.

“It was a great team effort all around. We knew we needed to eliminate walks, needed to eliminate errors, and we needed to put the ball in play,” said RFHS Head Baseball Coach Jerry Howell.

Garrett Loudermilk was the starting pitcher for RFHS and threw five innings, striking out five and allowing two earned runs.

Konnor McMahon relieved Loudermilk in the fifth and picked up the win, striking out two batters.

In the first inning, OG took a 3-0 lead after a couple errors by the RFHS infield assisted OG on two of their runs brought in (RBI).

In the second inning, RFHS tied it up with three runs of their own. Base hits by Zachary Zavala, Michael Mayes, and Cass Flores brought in three runners.

In the third, OG brought in one more run and looked to bring in more until a ball hit high towards first was caught in the air by Zavala to end the inning.

In the fourth, Mayes kept RFHS level with OG with another RBI.

OG answered back in the fifth inning with another RBI to take back the lead.

In the sixth inning, McMahon took over on the mound and kept OG scoreless.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Adam Muirhead loaded the bases with a single. Flores followed A. Muirhead with a single to shallow centerfield and brought in two runners to give RFHS a 6-5 lead into the seventh inning.

“Flores came out hot tonight,” said Howell. “He was driving the ball and doing great things for us.”

In the seventh, OG threatened to score after a couple walks given up by McMahon put two runners in scoring position. However, McMahon ended it, striking out OG’s last batter for the win.

Flores led RFHS offensively, going 4-4 with three RBI’s.

Mayes went 1-3 with two RBI’s.

Zavala went 2-3 with one RBI.

RFHS played Sinton Friday, April 12. Their next game is 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 at Beeville.
