Clay Williams slides safely into third base before Ingleside could attempt the throw back.

The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate baseball team defeated the Ingleside Mustangs 6-5 Tuesday, March 10 in walk-off fashion at Whataburger Field to open district play.

RFHS’ district record is 1-0 and its overall record 5-5.

The Pirates initially jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Ingleside worked its way back with four-runs in the fourth inning to put them right back in it. The game came down to the Pirates final at bat, where Garrett Loudermilk ran in the game-winning run off an errant throw from first to third base.

“We’re ready for what comes in district. That was a big win,” said RFHS Head Baseball Coach Arturo Elizondo.

After trading runs in the third inning, Ingleside scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning after an error in the infield and a couple hits to shallow left and right field. With runners threatening, Adam Muirhead closed the inning on a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fourth, Clay Williams brought in Ean McPherson to tie the game at 5-5.

In the top of the fifth, RFHS retired Ingleside on a double play. A. Muirhead fielded a short ground ball and threw to first baseman Zach Zavala for the first out. Zavala then threw to third baseman Cass Flores as Ingleside attempted to steal third but could not beat the tag by Flores.

A. Muirhead was relieved by Luke Muirhead in the top of the sixth with two outs. A. Muirhead struck out the next batter for the third out.

After an unsuccessful series at bat for RFHS in the bottom of the sixth, the game remained tied heading into the seventh.

In the top of the seventh, Ingleside loaded the bases with two outs. L. Muirhead was able to save RFHS with a strikeout on the next batter.

In RFHS’ last series at bat, Loudermilk led off with a double that sailed just over the reach of the Ingleside centerfielder. A. Muirhead then hit a groundball to third base and was thrown out. The out at first allowed Loudermilk the opportunity to steal third. On the throw back to third base, the ball was errantly thrown and nearly hit Loudermilk. Once Loudermilk saw the overthrow, he sprinted home for a walk-off steal to end the game 6-5.

“As soon as he (Ingleside third baseman) threw it, Garrett was coming no matter what,” said Elizondo. “But the ball got away, and it worked out.”

A. Muirhead was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run and recording 11 strikeouts.

L. Muirhead threw four strikeouts. He was also 3-4 at bat and scored one run.

Loudermilk was 3-4 at bat, brought one run in and scored twice.

Cass Flores was 2-3 at bat and brought in two runs.

RFHS will play in a tournament in Goliad over the weekend. Next district game is 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17 at West Oso.
