The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate football team handily defeated the Robstown Cottonpickers 49-0 Friday, Oct. 29 in Robstown.
The win puts RFHS at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in district play.
The Pirates will play their last regular season game this week against Port Isabel (PI).
RFHS remains tied for second place with Ingleside in District 16-4A DII. Ingleside will play first place Sinton this week. The current third seed is PI.
Sinton, RFHS, Ingleside, and PI are locked to make the playoffs, but this week’s games will decide final seeding.
Against Robstown, an early fumble at the goal line led to a sluggish start for RFHS in their first possession. After that, the Pirates took over and cruised to a 49-0 victory.
John Chupe finished with 200 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns (TD) to help lead the Pirates on offense.
The defense capitalized on key turnovers in the redzone to keep the Cottonpickers from scoring.
During the game, linebackers Joe Moreno and Payton McAlister surpassed 100 tackles on the season.
Moreno leads the team with 108 tackles. McAlister is second on the team with 101 tackles.
In the first quarter, the Pirates only managed to score once on a 30-yard TD pass from Ace Seibert to Rickey Franks with 2:13 left. However, RFHS got rolling in the second quarter with multiple scores.
To open the second quarter, A. Seibert found John Chupe down the middle on a 65-yard bomb to make it 13-0 after a missed extra point.
The RFHS defense got the ball back the next series with an interception by Carsen Flores.
A scrambling A. Seibert found Chupe again near the sideline and completed it for a 38-yard TD pass to make it 20-0.
A quick stop by the Pirate defense led to another score on offense by Devan Phillips on a short run up the middle to make it 27-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, the RFHS’ special teams got on the scoreboard after a blocked punt by McAlister led to a recovery by Kaden Kennedy in the endzone. Cristobol Deleon ran in a two-point conversion to make it 35-0.
The Pirates scored again five minutes later on a short run up the middle by Luke Muirhead. Another missed extra point made it 41-0.
In the fourth quarter, RFHS rested most of their starters but scored once more on a 45-yard run by David Chittarath. An A. Seibert two-point conversion to Phillip Krupa led to the final score of 49-0.
Kennedy, who recovered the blocked punt for a TD in the third quarter, recorded the Pirates’ last turnover with an interception.
A. Seibert was 5-11 for 174 yards and three TD’s passing.
Chupe led RFHS in rushing with 9-97 yards. He was also 2-103 yards receiving for two TD’s.
Chittarath was 5-61 rushing with one TD.
Phillips was 6-57 rushing with one TD. He was also 1-34 receiving.
Muirhead was 6-38 rushing with one TD.
Franks was 2-37 receiving with one TD.
Moreno led RFHS defensively with 15 tackles, four for a loss.
McAlister followed with 13 tackles, four for a loss. He also had two sacks, a pass break-up, and a blocked punt.
Krupa and Ayden Rangel had nine tackles each.
Kennedy and Flores each had one interception and a pass break-up.
The Pirates will face PI in their final home game of the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5.
