The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate softball team defeated the Beeville Lady Trojans 10-0 by 6th inning run-rule for their ninth win in a row Tuesday, March 22 at home.
RFHS is now 4-0 in district play and 18-4 overall.
The Lady Pirates appeared as though they would end the game sooner after rattling off two homeruns in the first inning.
Payton Martinez hit an inside the park homerun. Krystal Kutach hit one deep past the centerfield wall for a three-run homer to give RFHS a 5-0 lead.
Kutach thought Martinez’ homer was much more impressive than hers.
“She’s just so fast. If I would have hit that I probably would of gotten a double,” said Kutach. “We just kept hitting and I ended up hitting one over the fence. It was going great.”
However, RFHS brought in only one more run the next four innings.
RFHS Head Coach Melissa Reyes said the team had to make some adjustments at the plate as the wind kept some of their bigger swings from turning into more homeruns.
“It wasn’t like we weren’t making good contact. It had gotten super windy so a lot of those balls that probably would be out (of the park) were dropping in,” said Reyes.
RFHS adjusted in the sixth inning as the top of their lineup came back around for five straight hits to end the game.
Kutach never doubted the team would find its rhythm again.
“We did go through a little slump, but it was OK because I knew the team would come back and we did just that,” said Kutach.
On the mound, freshman pitcher Maddie Mauricio posted another shutout. She struck out nine and allowed only one hit.
Kutach finished 2-4 with three RBI, and three runs, including her homerun.
Alana Garcia and Kymberlyn Gerloff were both 2-4 with two RBI.
Martinez was 3-4 with one RBI, two scores, and an inside the park homerun.
Natalie Munoz was 2-3 and scored twice.
RFHS played Ingleside Friday, March 25. Their next game is 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 versus Sinton at home.
