The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate basketball team clinched a playoff berth and moved to 10-0 in district play following its victory over the Orange Grove (OG) Bulldogs 58-46 Tuesday, Feb. 4 in OG.
RFHS’ district record improves to 10-0 with an overall record of 24-6.
The Pirates sit two games ahead of second place Sinton (8-2) in District 31-4A standings with four games remaining. If RFHS wins at Sinton Friday, Feb. 7, the probability of a district championship increases significantly, needing only to win one of their remaining three games.
In the first quarter, OG took an early 4-0 lead but was quickly erased after back-to-back-to-back buckets by Tyson Cox and Cole Armstrong. RFHS stayed hot for the remainder of the quarter to take a 15-5 lead.
In the second, RFHS continued to roll with and built up a big 25-7 lead over OG. Armstrong exposed OG numerous times on the fast break along with Ty Klender and Chance Bates each hitting 3-point field goals (FG). OG was able to get back into the game toward the end of the quarter and knocked down a series of shots that lessened the blow of the Pirates lead. RFHS took a 34-22 led into the half.
In the third, RFHS entered the quarter in a lull as OG got the game back to within seven as RFHS struggled to take the ball away on defense and were unable to score on offense. Cox scored the first points of the quarter with around 3:45 remaining. From then, RFHS climbed out of its lull as Konnor McMahon finished on multiple drives to the basket. Kaden Harder followed with four points to put the score at 45-32 to end the quarter.
In the fourth, RFHS sustained its lead throughout the quarter as both teams traded shot for shot. OG was not able to hit the extra shots needed to over come RFHS’ lead, losing 58-46.
Cox led RFHS in scoring with 16 points.
McMahon followed with 11 points and Harder scored eight.
RFHS played Friday, Feb. 7 at Sinton. They play again at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 against Beeville.
