The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate softball team (#1) defeated the La Vernia Lady Bears 4-2 in a one game series in the area round Friday, May 7 in Beeville.
RFHS improves its overall record to 26-1.
La Vernia stuck around for a full seven innings but a strong finish by pitcher Siarah Galvan and a key run scored in the top of the 7th inning pushed the Lady Pirates to victory.
Up only one run 3-2 heading into the 7th inning, RFHS was looking to bring in at least one more run using small ball to decide the game. RFHS Head Softball Coach Melissa Reyes said it was one of the situations they’ve practiced for.
“We practice situations like that where the other team is going to be in a position to score,” said Reyes. “It’s about remaining calm, making sure we’re communicating as a team, anticipating what’s going to happen, and just working together as a team to get the necessary outs to keep them from scoring.”
Emma Groseclose and Alana Garcia got on base in the top of the 7th inning with 0 outs. Lydia Zavala laid down a sac-bunt to move Groseclose and Garcia over. Kymberlyn Gerloff then delivered a ground ball to first and brought in Groseclose to make it 4-2.
Galvan, who struck out seven batters in the last three innings, said Gerloff’s hit to bring in Groseclose gave her confidence heading into the bottom half of the inning.
“The pressure was there, pitching, but in the 7th inning when we scored the run, I was confident. I didn’t feel any pressure (anymore),” said Galvan. “It’s more comfortable knowing instead of only one, there’s a two-run gap. So I just go in there and do my thing.”
La Vernia caught Galvan a couple times in the 3rd and 4th innings, but was dominant otherwise.
“That’s the great thing about Siarah. Sometimes you may give up a run or give up a hit, but her mental toughness, I never ever questioned or doubted her at all,” said Reyes.
She finished with 13 strikeouts, allowed four hits, and allowed one earned run.
RFHS jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning by way of a groundout-RBI from Maddie Mann and an RBI-single from Galvan.
Following the opening inning, RFHS struggled to string together hits as La Vernia eventually put the game close again at 3-2. Reyes said she had no doubt someone on the team would eventually deliver.
Against La Vernia, it was Gerloff that answered the bell.
“All we wanted her to do was put the ball in play on the right side, giving us the opportunity to score from third base, which she executed perfectly,” said Reyes.
Offensively, Mann led RFHS, despite not getting on base, with two RBI’s.
Galvan was 1-2 with one RBI.
Payton Martinez was 2-3 and scored twice.
Gerloff was 0-3 with one RBI.
As of Monday, May 10, RFHS remains the #1 ranked 4A team in the state, according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll.
