So how do we know that this is the COVID year of 2020?

Here’s how:

To start, nary a beer nor a brat was served at 12 of the 16 NFL stadiums that hosted games in Week 1 of the new season.

Also, The GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) Tom Brady spent his afternoon throwing interceptions in a losing cause as quarterback of the - wait for it - Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And this: Defending NFC champion San Francisco lost its season opener - at home - to Arizona.

Finally, for the first time since 2007 the revered Gjallarhorn, part of a mythological Norse tradition, was not sounded to announce the opening of the Minnesota Vikings home game.

Of course some signs of the normal times did peek through. Seattle’s quarterback phenom Russell Wilson went 31-35 for 322 yards and four touchdowns to whip Atlanta. And, of course, the Jets lost.

Finally, the POWER POINTS Football Contest embarked on its 31st season of providing newspaper readers big chances to win big prizes - including a potential $1,000 prize each week.

In keeping with the oddities of the day, one of the smallest participating newspapers produced the Grand Prize in Week 1 of the contest. Donna Snider, of Council Grove, KS, tallied 121 of the possible 136 points to take home Grand Prize honors. She entered the contest through the Council Grove Republican newspaper in Council Grove, KS.

Local winner

The name of the local winner through The Rockport Pilot for Week 1 was Dolores Bagley with 107 points.

The names of the local winners from each week will be thrown into a hat for a chance at a $100 drawing at the end of the contest.

The POWER POINTS Football Contest is published each week in the weekend edition of The Pilot during the NFL football season. One overall winner each week receives up to a $1,000 check from the contest organizers (not The Rockport Pilot).

Fearless prognosticators

The sponsors of POWER POINTS Football Contest pit their football knowledge (and luck!) against each other throughout the 17-week contest.
