The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirated football team played an efficient offensively in what would be their last game before the start of the postseason Friday, Oct. 30 in a 42-12 victory over the Ingleside Mustangs at Ingleside.
On Thursday, Oct. 29, Robstown was alerted of a positive COVID-19 case within the varsity football team. The positive case led to a forfeit of their district game against Sinton Friday, Oct. 30.
RFHS Head Football Coach Jay Seibert confirmed Robstown would also be forfeiting their game with the Pirates Friday, Nov. 6. RFHS will not seek a replacement game.
The forfeits lead to a second place finish for RFHS in District 16-4A Division II.
RFHS will finish the season with an overall record of 4-4 and a district record of 3-1.
J. Seibert said the team is a bit banged up and will use the upcoming week to rest and recover. Kaden Harder, RFHS’ big receiving threat, suffered an ankle injury against Ingleside. The Pirates are hopeful Harder will return for their first round playoff game.
Behind a big offensive performance by quarterback Ace Seibert, the Pirates took a commanding lead through the air. J. Seibert said he was proud of the way the team got after the Mustangs.
“I thought the offense was explosive at times, but still some times we kind of puttered out a bit. Penalties have kind of gotten us in trouble when we get behind the sticks,” said J. Seibert.
The Pirate defense also played well against the Mustangs ground game, causing eight fumbles.
In the first quarter, the game started with both teams trading possessions after the Pirates received the initial kickoff. In their second possession, it was Harder all the way, catching two passes for 66 yards and scoring on a 46 yard touchdown (TD) pass from A. Seibert for a 7-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Ingleside answered right back with a 6 yard QB keeper for a score. Mustangs missed the point after to trail 7-6.
In the ensuing drive, Devan Phillips got RFHS to the Mustangs side of the field after a big run. A. Seibert then connected with Cade Leal for a wide-open 20-yard TD pass to take a 14-6 lead with 2:28 left in the quarter.
In the second quarter, RFHS started with possession but lost the ball in a fumble. However, RFHS got it right back after forcing a punt.
Both teams struggled to move the ball during the quarter until Joe Moreno recovered a fumbled snap in the final minute of the half. Two plays later, John Chupe found some room up the middle on a 35 yard TD to put RFHS up 21-6. Ingleside then took a knee to end the half.
In the third quarter, Ingleside opened with possession but the RFHS defense forced a turnover on downs.
RFHS then went on a long drive and consumed most of the quarter. During this drive, Harder was injured by an Ingleside safety on an incomplete pass. The player was later ejected.
After eventually getting into the redzone, RFHS scored on a six yard TD pass from A. Seibert to Chupe with 3:38 left in the third.
On the ensuing kickoff return, Phillips recovered a fumble by the Mustangs and set the Pirates inside the 20. Two plays later, A. Seibert completed his fourth TD pass on a 15 yard dump off to Ryan Wells to make it 35-6.
OLB Brayden Anderberg got the ball back for RFHS soon after on a strip sack that was recovered by Adrian Sanchez.
In the fourth quarter, the Pirates chewed clock on the ground and then struck on a 35 yard TD pass from A. Seibert to C. Leal to make it 42-12. Both of Leal’s receptions went for TD’s.
With seven minutes left, Ingleside scored their second TD, but failed in converting for two. RFHS held onto the ball the rest of the way for a 42-12 victory to end the regular season.
Offensively, A. Seibert was 6-8 passing with 141 yards and 5 TD’s.
Leal caught two of those TD’s for 55 yards.
