Five athletes with the Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate and Lady Pirate track teams ended their season Saturday, April 30 at the 4A Region IV track meet at Texas A&M University – Kingsville.
It’s the first time since 2017 that RFHS did not have an athlete qualify to the state meet.
Rickey Franks and Leroy Burke came the closest to qualifying.
Franks placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.66. He was .16 seconds shy of second place; only the top two finishers qualify to the state meet.
RFHS Head Boys Track Coach Tanner Swinford said Franks had been dealing with injuries and missed a month of training before running his first race back at the district meet. Franks had just built back up to running as fast as he had been running in February, before injuries.
Burke placed third in pole vault with a clearance of 13 feet.
Burke had cleared 14 feet the week before at the area meet, but was unable to clear that height at region.
Brody Karl placed behind Burke in pole vault with a fourth place finish. He also cleared 13 feet, but placed fourth due to number of scratches.
Payton McAlister placed ninth in discus with a throw of 132’11”.
Piper Shearer, the lone Lady Pirate to qualify for the region meet, placed eighth in discus with a throw of 112’4”.
