The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Pirate football team was recently ranked as one of the top 25 best football teams in the 2019 summer issue of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (DCTF) magazine.
The magazine recently released in late June.
DCTF ranked the Pirates no. 21 out of 25 in its 4A-DII preseason state rankings. The Pirates are also the magazine’s preseason favorite to win the district.
“It’s always exciting when you are ranked in the top 25 and picked to win district,” said RFHS Head Football Coach Jay Seibert. “You would rather be the favorite, but regardless of what you’re ranked, you have to earn it. We have to go to work to get ready for the season and go win some football games.”
In the magazines 4A-DII preview, DCTF’s Max Thompson say’s the Pirates are one of five teams in position to be the Region IV representative in the 4A-DII state playoffs.
“The Gobblers (Cuero) will always be in the mix for the region crown and beyond, and expect Geronimo Navarro, Wimberley and Rockport-Fulton to jockey for position, along with a steadily climbing Raymondville squad from down south,” said Thompson.
Defensive tackle Cruz Estrada was picked by the magazine as the Preseason Most Valuable Player on defense for the district as well.
Other players mentioned in the magazine as ‘Players to watch,’ are Garrett Loudermilk, Ty Klender, Brandon Killough, Adam Muirhead, Sam Cheaney, Ryan Wells, Bronnson Hutson, John Chupe, Zachary Zavala, Kaden Harder, Logan Lillis, Chris Darnold, Edgar Deleon, Cass Flores, and Devin Mendoza.
“We have a great group of young men suiting up for the Pirates this year,” said Seibert. “It’s how you’re ranked, and what you have accomplished at the end of the year that matters.”
The magazine can be purchased at select Wal-Mart’s and H-E-B’s in the area or ordered online.
