The Rockport-Fulton High School (RFHS) Lady Pirate basketball team struggled to keep pace with the Robstown Lady Cotton Pickers in a 48-19 loss Friday, Dec. 20 at home.
RFHS now holds a 1-1 district record with a 9-7 overall record.
The Lady Pirates struggled to make shots offensively and were overwhelmed on defense by the efficient play of Robstown throughout the first half.
In the first quarter, Jordan Malone scored the only basket against Robstown’s 21 points scored in the quarter. The Lady Pickers moved the ball well inside and out, knocking down three 3-pointers. RFHS trailed 21-2 to end the quarter.
In the second, Robstown continued to play at a high level, scoring 14 points to RFHS’ four points. Malone went 2-2 on free throws and Kaylee Howell scored her first points of the game on a layup. Robstown built up a commanding lead as RFHS’ scoring struggles continued as the Lady Pickers took a 35-6 lead at the half.
In the third, Robstown began to slow down offensively while Howell forced fouls with hard drives to the net. Howell went 3-4 from the line and knocked down one field goal. Robstown continued to hold a firm lead into the fourth at 44-11.
In the fourth, Howell found success again in the paint, scoring six points and drawing three fouls. Malone also knocked down another field goal, but Robstown’s big lead was too much for RFHS to come back from; losing 48-19.
Howell led RFHS in scoring with 13 points.
Malone followed with six points.
RFHS will take a week break and resume play with a tournament Friday, Dec. 27 at West Oso.
