Birding team students associated with the Aransas County Independent School District (ACISD) competed in the 23rd annual Great Texas Birding Classic (GTBC) from April 15-May 15, 2019. Results from the event were released Saturday, June 1 at the awards ceremony in San Antonio.

For the second year in a row, birding teams with the Fulton Learning Center (FLC) swept the competition with a first, second, and third place finish in the region and state.

Participating in the Roughwings division, the state and region wide first place team, Mile 533 Marine Ways Freaky Frigates, logged 108 bird species seen.

“Kam Alston, Noble Chapman, and Jaxon Keown won first place last year and first place this year,” said FLC Birding Sponsor Martha McLeod. “I do not believe we have ever had the same group of kiddos win first place, two years in a row. Awesome!”

The state and region wide second place team in the Roughwings division was the Aransas Bird and Nature Club (ABNC) Outstanding Ospreys with 103 logged bird species.

In third place, it was a tie between two FLC teams with both identifying 81 species of birds. ABNC Spectacular Spoonbills and Texas Ornithological Society (TOS) Southern Sandpipers shared the third place spot.

Along with the four FLC teams, students from Rockport-Fulton Middle School and Rockport-Fulton High School comprised to make three additional teams to compete in the GTBC. It was the highest number of teams the ACISD had ever entered into the event.

Attaining first place in region and state in the Gliders division was TOS Senior Soras with 106 logged bird species.

Competing in an all-age-level Human Powered division, TOS Pedal Pushin’ Petrels placed third in the state with 96 species of birds logged. The team traveled 12 miles over Port Aransas by bicycle. No regional results were taken in this division.

Competing in an all-age-level Sunrise Until Noon division, TOS 5 Finchtastic Females placed third in the state with 107 logged bird species. Regional results were not taken in this division either.
