Rockport-Fulton High School student Sam Holden was selected by the Aransas Bird and Nature Club (ABNC) as their designee to receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the “Rio Diablo Birding Camp” in the summer. The camp is held each year in the southwest region of Texas.

Holden has been involved with the Aransas County Independent School District (ACISD) birding program since he was in 4th grade. His team won top honors in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Birding Classic.

“I am so impressed with Sam’s initiative to apply to attend this prestigious summer camp. His drive and determination to learn more about the wildlife that inhabit our Texas ecosystems is outstanding,” said ACISD birding club sponsor Martha McLeod.

ABNC President Debra Corpora said, “The ABNC is very happy to sponsor Sam Holden at this camp. We will be using funds donated to the club in memory of my husband, who died last month of COVID-19. He was also named Sam, and loved birding in the Del Rio area.”

The camp will be held from May 29 to June 5, 2021.
