The formations of the 2020-21 Fulton Learning Center (FLC) Birding teams were recently announced by school sponsor Martha McLeod.
Try-outs were conducted during the first full week of face-to-face instruction in September.
The team is ready to begin learning about the migratory and resident species of birds in the Coastal Bend area. Students will practice every Wednesday at 7 a.m. in learning to identify bird species by their field marks and by the sounds they make.
Their first practice session was Wednesday, Sept. 30. Students learned the basic anatomy of birds and how to use a field guide. Within field guides, students analyzed the range maps to determine if species would be found here in Texas in a specific season.
The FLC birding program has been one of the top youth birding programs in the state for several years, with numerous first place finishes in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept.’s annual Great Texas Birding Classic.
