The Fulton Learning Center (FLC) Birding Team took its first field trip of the year to Hazel Bazemore Park in Calallen, Friday, Sept. 27.
An annual hawk watch was being conducted in the park and a private lesson on characteristics of raptors, and their migration, was given to students by Hawk Watch Researcher and Raptor Specialist Dane Ferrell.
Students also participated in an interactive presentation by Sky Kings Falconry. On display were an African White-Necked Raven, an Australian Laughing Kookaburra, a Barn Owl, a Northern Crested Caracara, and a Black Vulture.
There were 51 species of birds identified by the team of students during the trip. There were also several vendor booths set up where students could purchase wildlife souvenirs.
Students participating included; fifth graders Ty Blankenship, Juliet Flores, Elsie Hale, Lauren Holden, Kathryn Jones, Jake Self, Brayden Tran, and Payton Vannapha; fourth graders, Ryan Brewington, Kinslee Burton, Cason Cruzan, Cruz Dominguez, Layton Frazier, Arwen Griffith, Conner Hale, Jacinta Pham, Faith Stiles, Riley Waggoner, and Logann Wood; third graders, Blaine Chapman, Kennedy Engel, and Everett Gambill.
Students were accompanied by Aransas Bird and Nature Club Mentor Bron Rorex Carrier and Skip Carrier, along with FLC School Sponsor Martha McLeod.
