The annual BBQ Cook-off benefitting the scholarship program for American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 363 will be held Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Carl Morrison American Legion Post, 1701 S. Church Street.
ALA Unit 363 provides two scholarships each school year to ALA-eligible young women graduating from Rockport-Fulton High School. This means they are the spouse, daughter, or granddaughter of a U.S. Military veteran.
For the 2020-2021 school year, ALA Unit 363 awarded Rockport-Fulton High School seniors Kassidy Khan and Siarah Galvan with $1,000 scholarships to help begin their college career.
“As a child of a Veteran, I know how important these scholarships are for these young women to help them go to school and make lives better for their families,” said First Vice President of ALA Unit 363 and Scholarship Committee Chair Denise Yanus.
Khan, who is the granddaughter of a veteran, said, “It means the world,” to her to be recognized for her hard work.
“My grandfather was my inspiration. He worked hard and he pushed me to work hard. I was excited to see that I was eligible for this scholarship,” said Khan.
The cook-off consists of six categories for entry: brisket, ribs (beef or pork), fajita meat, chicken, beans and dessert. All entries must be cooked on site, but this year, teams may set up in the parking lot of the Legion beginning at noon Friday, Aug. 20 to begin the cooking process.
Entry fees for each category are brisket, $35; ribs (beef or pork), $25; fajita meat, $25; chicken, $20; beans $10; and dessert, $5. Teams can compete in more than one category.
BBQ pits must be portable and intended for recreational use. Only wood, wood pellets and charcoal are to be used and no open fires are allowed. Each team is responsible for providing its own pit, meat, beans, cooking utensils, spices, etc. Electricity is not provided. Each team is also responsible for cleaning up its own cooking implements and disposing of any garbage.
Judging will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21.
In conjunction with the cook-off, ALA Unit 363 will have hot dogs and chips for sale from noon until 3 p.m. There will also be a bake sale and an auction.
Johnny Santos and Ernie Guzman will provide live music at the event.
ALA Unit 363 encourages the community to come out and support.
For those wishing to compete in the cook-off, entry forms and additional rules can be obtained at the Carl Morrison American Legion Post 363, 1701 S. Church Street.
