Dear editor:

My wife and I went to the boat parade this past Fourth of July. It was disappointing as most boats turned around and went back well short of the channel exit to the bay. The throwing of water balloons by spectators, residents of Key Allegro, and the boaters also appalled us. Not only could the balloons be mistaken for food and ingested by birds, turtles, and marine life causing damage and death, but this is also littering.

After months and millions of dollars spent and thousands of hours by volunteers cleaning up the bays and waterways after Harvey, why is this happening? This littering needs to be stopped. Law enforcement should be on site before next year’s parade and warning signs need to be posted.
