Dear editor:

I would like to respond to your column in the April 15 edition suggesting readers start “cleaning up” and then “flood Castaways with boxes as soon as they reopen”.

As a Castaways’ volunteer, I cringed when I read that!

Please do not flood Castaways with donations as soon as it reopens.

Because the Winter Texans will have returned to their homes by the time Castaways reopens, there will be a minimal number of volunteers to handle donations. If the volunteers get too overwhelmed and unable to handle the “flood” of donations, the only option will be to stop accepting donations temporarily.

Donations left after hours may be stolen or damaged due to rain and have to be trashed.

Please know that Castaways is anxious to reopen, but asks for everyone’s cooperation and understanding when it comes to donations.

New volunteers are always needed, especially from now until November. If interested, just stop by any time during regular business hours once Castaways reopens.

There is a spot for you!
