S.E. Kelly Jr.
September 29, 1929-February 15, 2021
S.E. Kelly Jr. died peacefully in his home February 15 after 91 years of gracing his beloved family. He was born in Odem, Texas on September 29, 1929. He lived and went to school in Aransas Pass, Texas, where he met his wife Elizabeth “Betty” Kelly and graduated in 1947. They were married in 1948. He worked for CPL/AEP for 42 years, starting in the ice plant in 1946 and retired in 1988 as District Manager. He spent most of his career in Bay City and Corpus Christi and moved to Lamar, Texas, after his retirement.
He was an active civil servant serving on numerous boards in his career including Rotary Club, Corpus Christi Board of Trade, Navy League, Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Commission, Salvation Army, United Way, and numerous banks. After moving to Rockport, he served on the Aransas County Appraisal District Board, Lamar Municipal Utility District for 20 years, and Rockport Country Club.
He absolutely loved playing golf and played every day for most of his time in Corpus Christi and built golf clubs for years after retirement. He was a duck guide in high school and loved all forms of hunting and fishing with his sons and friends.
S.E. was the youngest of ten children during the depression and enjoyed close relationships with all his siblings and their families throughout his life. He and Betty celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998, surrounded by family and loved ones. He and Betty loved to host large parties and entertain, and they were both active in St. Marks’s Episcopal Church in Bay City, St. Bartholomew’s in Corpus Christi, and St. Peters in Rockport, where they were also married. He loved working every Monday at Castaways and baked brownies for the volunteers until his daughter Rachel joined him and took over the baking duties when she could.
S.E. worked hard to make new relationships and get to know people. He never met a stranger and was loved by so many. He enjoyed a remarkable memory to the end, always telling stories from his full life rich with experiences. He was so dearly loved and will be missed.
S.E. was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 1999, his son Leslie in 2001, and his son Stephen in May of 2020. He is survived by his son Glenn Kelly and his wife Mary, his daughter Rachel McKee, and grandchildren Jessie Kelly, Shannon Vann, Ashley Brandon, and Carter McKee.
Funeral arrangements are with Maxwell P. Dunn Funeral Home. We will plan a memorial service when possible as the pandemic allows.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the St Peter's Episcopal Church in Rockport.
