Aransas County Navigation District (ACND) commissioners, at their regular meeting Monday, July 1, learned the contractor for the Bay Education Center (BEC) will be given the keys Monday, July 8, and repairs to that popular facility will begin.
Teal Construction, the same company that is building the Aransas County Independent School District’s competition gym, is the contractor.
ACND Harbor Master Keith Barrett said it should take 90 days to complete needed repairs.
Originally, the BEC was constructed on land provided by the ACND. The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) provided the majority of the original construction funds, with the City of Rockport providing construction funds, as well.
Following action taken at the ACND’s June 3 meeting, UTMSI will lease the BEC from the ACND for $1 per year for five years. The lease has two five-year options.
At the same meeting, the district signed a new agreement with the City of Rockport, which severed the relationship between the ACND and city, as it relates to the BEC.
A new agreement between the city and ACND released the insurance proceeds received by the city and turns them over to the ACND. Those funds, totaling $528,333.16, are being used to repair the BEC.
