A body, believed to be that of Billy Whitefield, was found just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 in a navigation channel in Cove Harbor near where he was reported missing Sunday, Nov. 24, shortly after midnight.

Preliminary identification was made through personal affects, next-of-kin, and known description. An Aransas County Justice of the Peace pronounced him dead and ordered an autopsy. Positive identification will be confirmed through autopsy.

Information developed to this point in the investigation indicates Whitefield likely fell into the water accidently, while alone, and drowned. Foul play is not suspected.

This incident remains under investigation by the Rockport Police Department and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

(Note: This information was received the day the body was discovered, but was not in an earlier print edition due the early deadlines during Thanksgiving week. It was posted immediately to The Pilot’s website and Facebook page.)
