Castaways grant recipients

Representatives of the 33 Castaways’ grant recipients accepted their checks at a special ceremony Sunday, Jan. 19 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Castaways Thrift Shop held its 2nd annual grant presentation Sunday, Jan. 19 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Representatives from the 33 grant recipients, as well as Castaways’ volunteers attended the event.

This year’s grants totaled $393,000.

Castaways Treasurer Bruce Goodlock opened the celebration with a prayer, which was followed by the lighting of a memorial candle in memory of two Castaways’ volunteers/supporters - Shirley Smith and Ronnie Murray.

Castaways Shop/Community Co-chair Debbie Guzman provided a brief history of Castaways, going back to 1972 when it was a once per week rummage sale to raise money for the churches’ ministries.

Today, five churches (Catholic, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran and Methodist) are heavily involved. The Shop/Community makes up the sixth member.

The group uses profits from store sales, minus expenses of running the store, to fund the grants presented. Member churches contribute a percentage of their sales toward expenses, and the balance is used for each of the churches individual ministries.

Castaways Thrift Shop gives back to the community through grants to 33 non-profits, who in turn, give back to the community in their own way.
