The amount paid in daily per diem to City of Rockport staff and elected officials, when traveling for official business, is about to change. The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, July 23, approved on first reading an ordinance changing the per diem rate to $59 (from $35), which is the average daily United States General Services Administration (GSA) rate for the state.

Director of Finance Katie Griffin said the per diem rate has been $35 per day ($8 breakfast, $12 lunch, $15 dinner) for almost 20 years.

“This will bring us in line with today’s (rates),” she said.

The city already uses the posted GSA rate to reimburse mileage.

It was noted the GSA rates for mileage and daily per diem will change annually, based on the price of gas and average meal costs.

Griffin said the change will increase the departmental travel and training budgets about $3,000 annually, distributed between various funds and departments.

The council is expected to approve and adopt the ordinance on second reading at its next meeting.
