Aransas County Navigation District commissioners, at their regular meeting Monday, Nov. 4, unanimously approved the request of Poems on the Go to place boxes (which hold standard letter size paper) in prominent places within the ACND’s jurisdiction. The boxes will hold poems written by local poets.
Poems on the Go representative Karen Cline-Tardiff told commissioners she had talked to Rockport Cultural Arts District representatives and they came to the conclusion the best place to start would be on ACND property.
“The ACND would provide the posts and we’d install the boxes and be responsible for filling them with poetry each month,” said Cline-Tardiff.
The first such box will be located next to the ACND public restrooms at Rockport Harbor.
Harbor Master Keith Barrett said, “When someone stops for coffee or a bathroom break, this (poetry) might make them happy.”
Cline-Tardiff then read a poem, as an example of what would be placed in the boxes.
“I feel better already,” said Chairman Malcolm Dieckow.
Commissioner Judy Vlasek said her only concern is the leaflets on which the poems are written could become a litter problem.
Barrett said ACND staff will monitor the area, just as it does all district properties.
