With an eye to the future and hoping to get a jump on potential projects on two valuable pieces of harborfront property, Aransas County Navigation District (ACND) commissioners, at their regular meeting Tuesday, Aug. 6, set a deadline of Aug, 30 to have documents ready for Request for Proposals (RFP).
ACND Chairman Malcolm Dieckow said the district has two pieces of property ready for development – the south end of the Rockport Harborfront property and the former site of the Rockport Center for the Arts.
“We (expect) to have our Corps of Engineer’s permit by Aug. 31,” he said.
This action was taken so the RFPs are ready to be delivered when the permit is received.
“We want to strike while the iron is hot,” said Dieckow.
Commissioner Judy Vlasek said, “There are people with cash that can start tomorrow.”
Dieckow suggested the RFP be written in general terms in order to “cast the net far and wide.”
Wade H. Greene, LLC, who was hired in September 2018 to help the district with all its real estate transactions, said the RFP could be ready by Aug. 30, but suggested sending it out after the Labor Day weekend.
Commissioner Tommy Moore reiterated what Vlasek said, noting, “We have multiple interested (parties).”
He added that whatever is developed will be commercial in nature and must allow access to the waterfront, from the harbor to Market Street.
