Gregory Stevens assumed the lead of the Rockport Police Department (RPD) today - Wednesday, June 19. The former Lubbock police chief was the sole finalist for the RPD position, a job that drew more than 60 applications.
Stevens has more than 30 years of combined experience in civilian and military law enforcement. He retired May 31 from his position in Lubbock.
“Chief Stevens is taking over the reins of a revitalized Police Department thanks to the efforts of Interim Police Chief/Civilian Police Administrator Fred Fletcher,” said City Manager Kevin Carruth. “Fletcher was instrumental in implementing new policies and procedures and repairing the relationship with the District/County Attorney’s office.
“He was also actively involved in the national search for our new chief. He was in active communication with Stevens in regard to the changes and opportunities that await him in his new position.”
A community survey regarding the police department, crime, and public safety provided valuable input during the hiring process.
