Posted: Friday, May 23, 2008 12:00 am

Although Memorial Day marks the opening of the summer/tourist season, this year's holiday also marks the 50th anniversary of a tragedy which occurred at the Rockport beach. Seven people, two of them cousins, drowned after one of them slipped into a deep hole at the northern end of the beach and other individuals attempted to rescue her.

Those who drowned are Susana Virginia Torres, 9; Margarita Torres, 11; Oralia Cruz Tamez, 10; Dave W. Curby, 6; Mary Bailey, and her daughter Janice, 9; and Father Leonard Berry, 40.
