Former Rockport resident imprisoned in South Sudan

Posted: Friday, November 9, 2012 12:00 am

Former Rockport resident Elton “Mark” McCabe is apparently still alive, but remains in a South Sudan prison. His cousin, Cheryl Casterline of Rockport said Thursday, Nov. 8, “We had thought maybe he was dead. The American Embassy affirmed he was still alive yesterday (Nov. 7).”

McCabe, 52, working in South Sudan as a construction contractor, has been held since Oct. 14. South Sudan, located on the eastern side of the African continent, became an independent nation in 2011 when it seceded from Sudan. South Sudan also borders the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
