The Rockport Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene of a car fire in the 2100 block of Mathis Street, south of Church St. (Loop 70), at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. When firefighters arrived they found, fully engulfed, what appeared to be an abandoned vehicle in a small clearing. It was later identified as a 2018 Jeep Compass registered to Jack Rollins Jr., 55.

Rockport Police CID Commander Jerry Lawing said at about 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31 Rollins reported his vehicle (the Jeep) had been stolen.

Rollins said he started having car problems the previous day while driving on the Highway 35 Bypass. He reportedly pulled over near the Bypass’ intersection with 12th Street and called someone to pick him up. When he returned Monday morning to retrieve his vehicle it was no longer where he left it, and he reported it stolen.

It was then he learned his Jeep was destroyed by fire the night before.

Lawing said the incident is under investigation as a theft and arson.
