A 27-year-old Rockport woman died in a holding cell at the Aransas Pass Police Department (APPD) Friday, Sept. 23, and a cause of death is still unknown.
According to information from Aransas Pass Assistant Police Chief Bill Haines, the woman has been identified as Lisa Vela, who turned 27 that Friday.
He said Vela was apparently at a Stripes convenience store in the 800 block of South Commercial Street in Aransas Pass at about 3 a.m. Someone at the store apparently called officers about Vela, who appeared to be intoxicated.
Haines said officers did not charge Vela with public intoxication. After she was identified, officers discovered she was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Nueces County.
She was arrested and transported to the APPD where she was placed in a holding cell. At about 9:30 a.m., she was fingerprinted and photographed, Haines said. Nothing was out of the ordinary, he noted.
Approximately an hour and 15 minutes later, an AP justice of the peace went to the APPD to serve as magistrate. When an officer went to the cell to get Vela, she was found unresponsive.
She was pronounced dead and her body was transported to the Nueces County medical examiners office for an autopsy.
On Monday, Haines said a cause of death has not yet been determined and they are awaiting toxicology reports.
Haines said Texas Ranger Tony DeLuna has already been contacted and will be leading the investigation into Vela’s death.
