Aransas County Independent School District trustees, at their special meeting Thursday, Aug. 29, held public hearings for the 2019-20 budget and 2019 tax rate, and then unanimously approved the budget and tax rate.
There was no public comment at the hearings.
The new tax rate is $1.03 per $100 valuation, which is a 3.27 percent increase above the effective tax rate, or that rate which would raise the same amount of revenue as last year using current property values, less new construction.
Last year’s tax rate was $1.1639.
The big news about next year’s budget is trustees approved using 100 percent of the $1.254 million provided by HB 3 for pay raises for teachers, librarians, counselors, and nurses. The bill only required a portion of the funds be used in that manner.
Pay increases for ACISD employees provided via the new scale range from $4,000 to $8,500, or roughly 10 to 15 percent.
“We have worked tirelessly since the 2016 school year to provide an increase for ACISD employees,” said ACISD Superintendent Joseph Patek. “Each year, an obstacle was blocking a raise. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and this year being a session year, I was optimistic we would get it done. With the help of HB 3 and other cost saving measures, we are able to go above and beyond to provide a raise for our staff.”
