The Aransas County Independent School District (ACISD) announced Thursday, July 16 all in-person instruction will be suspended for the first three weeks of the 2020-21 school year; offering only virtual learning for the first three weeks. The projected start date for instruction was also delayed from Thursday, Aug. 13 to Monday, Aug. 17.

Due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in the Coastal Bend, the ACISD became one of many school districts across the state to take a virtual approach for the first three weeks of school instruction.

“This was not an easy decision to make because we very much want students back in our buildings,” said ACISD Superintendent Joseph Patek.

The ACISD is ensuring that every student will: have access to technology and Internet, and be provided with school supplies. They are also ensuring all ACISD teachers will be provided instruction for virtual learning.

In the ACISD Board of Trustee’s special board meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, more detail will be provided as to what the 2020-21 school year might look like. Results pertaining to the parent survey regarding face-to-face vs. virtual learning will also be released and discussed. The meeting will be held virtually.

“We are factoring in every concern imaginable,” said Patek.

The ACISD also announced Thursday, July 16 it will not limit any student from participating in extracurricular activities whether they choose to attend school in-person or virtually. The FM (LOCAL) policy previously prohibited any student from participating in ACISD extracurricular activities if the student did not attend school at an ACISD campus in-person.

The FM (LOCAL) policy was an agenda item to be voted “for” or “against” in a special board meeting Tuesday, July 14; the meeting was then canceled Monday, July 13 and the item was moved to the regular board meeting Thursday, July 16. However, before the meeting occurred Thursday, July 16, ACISD administration chose to not recommend the ACISD Board of Trustee’s vote on the policy. The item was later pulled from the agenda during the meeting.
