As a precautionary measure the annual Memorial Day Observance at Veterans Memorial Park has been cancelled, according to City of Rockport Director of Parks and Leisure Services Rick Martinez.

It would have been held Monday, May 25.

“This was not an easy decision to make as we’ve been holding this event for decades,” said Martinez. “It usually includes representatives of the American Legion, GI Forum, Veterans of Foreign Wars, ACND JROTC, Veterans Band of Corpus Christi, public safety officers, and countless others.

“Because of the size of the park and the number of attendees, we did not feel we could employ necessary social distancing practices for the safety of those in attendance. We ask that the residents of Aransas County take a moment during the day to give thanks to those who lost their life in service to our country,”

(Note: The GI Forum may do a wreath laying, but there are no definitive plans.)
