Many tributes for our service men and women

The day after 13 service members (11 Marines, one Navy sailor, and one Army solider) where killed Thursday, Aug. 26 by a suicide bomber at Kabul airport in Afghanistan, memorials were placed in a number of local watering holes, including Sugar Shack, Rock Bottom Park & Pub, and Poor Man’s Country Club. Other memorials were erected, including this one on Doral Street in Rockport Country Club (RCC). “I am not a veteran, but have tremendous admiration and respect for those who put their lives on the line such as those young men and women did in Afghanistan for their very last time Aug. 26,” said RCC resident Jeff Cathrow. As he set up the memorial, he had a conversation with his neighbor. “We had a nice long chat about the sad state of things in the world, and in our country now, yet we decided to continue to hope for better things to come in the future,” said Cathrow. “It’s about all we can do besides making a heartfelt statement like this, I suppose.”
